Retail industry info
The term ‘retail’ is derived form the French word ‘retailier’ which means ‘cutting off, clip and divide’ in terms of tailoring. The retail industry therefore is about selling (cutting) of goods or merchandise from a fixed location, such as a department store or kiosk, or by post, in small or individual lots (clip) for direct consumption by the purchaser (divide). Retailing can also include the subordinate service of delivery of the goods either to individuals or to businesses. A retailer buys the items of his use either directly or indirectly from a wholesaler and sells them in smaller quantities to the end-user. So, the retailers form the last link in the supply chain who make money by charging more than the cost price of the item. They usually purchase goods on a whole but sell each of them separately at varying prices.
The retail establishments are commonly known as shops or stores. These shops are located in residential areas, markets and malls. In order to expand their network and increase their sales, companies as well as retailers adopt various strategies such as advertising their items by putting banners, hoardings, distributing pamphlets, announcing on radio, television and internet. For instance, a retailer selling crockery can get a website made and put to display in an enticing way the various products at his/her shop. In the present competitive scenario, almost all the retailers are going online because unlike other channels of advertisement, the internet provides a global market and a platform worldwide to showcase your products.
Nowadays the retail industry has kind of become a part of the e-world too. There are numerous companies involved in the sale of websites. These sites are developed and updated for a certain period of time and then sold either by the company itself or the retailers who charge simply double the amount at which they purchased the site.
